French Toast or Gypsy Toast made with Duck Eggs

Ordinary plain white bread that is dipped in egg and milk and fried on the pan is called Gypsy Toast, French Toast, Eggy Bread, Pan Dulcis, Torrija, Fatias Douradas, Lost Bread and Pain Perdu. The name used today apparently comes from a New York innkeeper named Joseph French, who created a dish in 1724 and advertised it as "French's Toast". The printer made a mistake on his Menu and it became French Toast!

It's really simple to make and is a great way to get kids eating eggs. You can eat it with savoury or sweet additions or just with a knob of butter!

Traditionally French Toast is made from older or stale bread because it soaks up the egg mix better than when fresh, but you can use fresh bread anyway. When I was over in Norway last year one of the gourmet restaurants we were eating in served it up as a dessert with cinnamon-sugar and ice cream. Simple.

I picked up a half dozen lovely big free-range Duck Eggs at our local Leghowney Country Market yesterday, so I decided to make a big batch of French Toast with them.

Funny thing is, the man who was selling the eggs had never heard of dipping bread into beaten egg and frying it! I was telling him how to make it and was astounded that he'd never come across it before. He was going home to make some straight after the market! So, here is my recipe for French Toast.

My Ingredients:
2 large Eggs (Duck or Hens eggs)
100ml / ½Cup Milk
12 Slices White Bread (more or less)
rapeseed oil or vegetable oil to fry

My Method:

1. Cut the bread into half slices. Beat the eggs and milk together in a bowl.

2. Heat the pan on a low heat with a tiny rub of oil covering the base of the pan. Dip the bread into the egg mix, turning it over to cover both sides and shaking off any excess. Place on the frying pan leaving a space between each slice.

3. Cook until golden brown (approx. 1 min) on each side. Remove from the pan and cover with a cloth to keep warm. Repeat until all the egg mix is used up.

You can eat French Toast with anything! Spread it with Butter, sprinkle it with a little Sugar & Lemon, serve it with Bacon, Maple Syrup, Honey, Cinnamon Sugar, Ice-Cream, Strawberry Jam and Fresh Cream or just plain! Yum!

glutenfree apple marzipan muffins

we think muffins are perfect during summertime! you can make them really quickly and it`s the perfect food for a picnic, cause you even don`t need cutlery.
but because the german summer seems to be already over (where are you sun??) we decided to take a break from all the delicious berries and go for apples instead. this wasn´t a mistake at all, cause they tasted so good!! and aren´t apples and marzipan just the perfect combination?!
speaking of which: have you ever tried to eat almonds as a histamine-intolerant person? we heard that almonds are the only nuts that might be tolerated. well, if you can eat them go for the marzipan! if not, then just leave it, the muffins will still taste good.

recipe (for ca. 10pieces):
125g butter
75g sugar
3 eggs
250g rice flour (or another flour)
2tsp tartan baking powder
2tsp cinnamon
1/2-1pk vanilla-sugar
1/2tsp salt
2apples
50g marzipan (e.g. honey-marzipan from rapunzel is excactly 50g)
(muffin sheet, paper muffin cups)

butter and sugar should be room-temperature. preheat oven to 175degrees. beat butter and sugar. mix in the eggs one by one. mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, vanilla-sugar and salt in a separat bowl and sift and stir in (in 3parts) to the butter-sugar-egg-mix. cut one apple (peeled) and the marzipan in small cubes and fold gently in the dough. insert paper cups into the muffin sheet and spread the dough equally to the muffin cups. peel the other apple into thin slices and decorate the top of each muffin with 2pieces (press them a bit into the dough). bake muffins for 25min at 175degrees. serve them with a bit icing sugar on top and if you like with some extra whipped cream.

125g butter
75g zucker
3 eier
250g reismehl (o.ä.)
2tl weinsteinbackpulver
2tl zimt
1/2-1pk. vanillezucker
1/2tl salz
2äpfel

Irish Guy Playing the Spoons (used in eating!)

I came across this video on Facebook of an Irish guy playing the Spoons. The spoons are often played by percussionists and bodhran (traditional Irish drum) players along with Irish music in sessions.

The tune, however, that he's playing along to is "Insomnia", a dance track from British electronica band Faithless. It was recorded on phone by a musician from Manchester called Ellis Holden. Have a watch!

currant sorbet

when we were visting family on the country-side we discoverd lots of black- and red currants in their freezer - of course all from the garden...to celebrate this, we decided to make a currant sorbet. what could be better and easier?! :)

ingredients (for 4pers.)
600g currants (frozen are fine too)
200g sugar
100ml currant juice (apple juice, grape juice...works too)

bring currants and sugar slowly to boil in a pot. strain the mixture by using a food mill (or purée the mixture and strain it through a sieve). add the currant juice and pour the mix into a food container and leave at least for 4-5hours in the fridge (best stir the sorbet every 30min with a fork or similar for 4hours). serve with fresh currants and icing sugar; btw adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream does fit quite perfect as well.

vipp flower-styling event

scroll down for german translation

the danish label vipp (we already told you about it here) invited us and 13 other bloggers from europe to a flower-styling workshop in copenhagen. the whole shop was turned into a flower scenery, where ever you looked at - flowers were everywhere! it was so beautiful!!
first jette egelund, the owner of vipp, told us the whole story about vipp.  it was very touching and interesting to listen to her (you can see her on photo 3)  and if you want to know more about vipp we really suggest you to watch this video.
then the talented florist louise moestrup showed us how to work with flowers. we learned to make a flower ball and other floral decorations. after that, we styled a vipp bathroom and a vipp kitchen with flowers together in groups. thanks again to 'that nordic feeling' and 'la maison d' anna g'. was so fun to work with you ladies! the photographer anders hviid took pictures of our styling (picture 2, 4 and 6 are photographed by him) and now you can vote for your favourite picture at the vipp instagram account.
in the end of the day we decorated a big dinner table with all the lovely flower decorations we had made earlier and then had a fantastic dinner! thanks again to vipp, it was a great day!

cucumber-ginger drink

we just came back from copenhagen last week (we were at the vipp flower styling event, you can read more about it soon!) and immediatly left berlin again, this time to visit family on the country side.
the weather was perfect and we were just sitting outside, enjoying the sun, drinking this great "summer-refresher" and reading one of our favorite magazines, gather journal. if you have any chance to buy it, go for it! it`s a little bit different to all the food magazine everyone is used too, a bit more arty.
anyway, for hot summer days this cucumber-ginger drink is just perfect and so easy to make. give it a try.

recipe
ginger syrup (we discovered it in an organic supermarket)
cucumber
water (with or without gas - as you prefer)
ice cubes

add ice cubes to a glas (the more the better) and a few cucumber pieces, then pour a bit ginger syrup on top and fill up with water. stir the mix with a spoon, so the syrup can dissolve in the water.

glutenfree swiss roll with berries & white chocolate

everyone who follows us on instagram might have already noticed that we have some new ceramics...we were so happy when the danish label vipp sent us two of there beautiful brunch-sets.
we were already fascinated by there pure and functional design  since a long time and today we would like to show you a few pieces. on the pictures you can see the plate with the typical vipp-shape and also a cup from vipp.
in the beginning vipp got famous with their pedal bin, which is a design classic now and is also part of the architecture and design collection in MoMa. step by step they designed more products for kitchen and bathroom and now there is even a kitchen made by vipp. if you want to know more about the history of that charming danish family company, you should watch this video.
the glutenfree swiss roll, which nora baked on the weekend, was very delicious. first i was sceptic if it´s possible to have that typical fluffy consistence of the dough with a glutenfree flour, but it really worked well. we already baked it twice now and can assure, that even without cream it tastes really good. so everyone who can`t tolerate cow milk: just leave the cream!
we used white chocolate for the first time cause we read a couple of times that white chocolate is tolerated with a histamine intolerance. do you have any experiences with that?

ingredients (for 1 roll with ca. 10 pieces)

dough
60g rice flour
45g starch (corn flour)
1,5 tsp tartan baking powder
3 eggs
90g sugar
1 dash of salt
filling
100g blackberry jam
500ml whipping cream
2 pkt whipping cream stabilizer
1-2el sugar
decoration
fresh berries (blackberries, redcurrants, cherries)
white chocolate (for shaves, we bought vegan chocolate made from rice milk)
icing sugar

preheat oven to 190degrees (top/bottom heat). for the dough beat the eggs with the sugar and salt for 8min. mix rice flour, corn flour and tartar baking powder in a separate small bowl and sift this mix in 3 portions one by one to the egg-sugar-mix and fold in gently with a whisk. cover a baking sheet completely with baking paper, pour the dough on it and spread the dough with an angled spatula (or similar) evenly to all sides and corners. bake the dough 10min and turn the dough upside down on a clean kitchen towl sprinkled with 1-2tbsp of sugar. take off the baking paper carefully or if needed use a cooking-brush to dampen the paper a bit and remove then. now roll the dough together with the kitchen towl and leave to cool down. in the meantime shave off chocolate from the white chocolate with a long straight knife. when the dough is cooled down, start whip the whipping cream with the sugar and whipping stabilizer. roll up the dough, coat the dough first with a thin layer of jam, then a thicker layer of whipping cream and roll up everything gently (leave a 3cm stripe of dough without cream, otherwise the cream might oozes out, when you roll it up). take the rest of the whipping cream, put it in a decorating bag (or as we did: airtight bag), cut off the tip at one side and spread the whipping cream decoratively on the roll. sprinkle chocolate shaves on the top and leave the roll at least 1hour in the fridge. for serving garnish fresh berries and icing sugar on top.

teig
60g reismehl (o.ä.)
45g speisestärke
1,5 tl weinsteinbackpulver
3 eier
90g zucker
1 prise salz
füllung
100g brombeermarmelade
500ml schlagsahne
2 pck. sahnesteif
1-2 el zucker
deko
frische beeren (brombeeren, johannisbeeren, kirschen)
