Cuinneog Ltd

Cuinneog has produced the finest quality Irish Farmhouse Country Butter and Natural Buttermilk for the past 25 years. Their butter is produced with pasteruised cream, a little salt and time. James Whelan Beef Dripping

Having their own farm, abattoir and shop to sell their beef, allows James Whelan Butchers to give people that essential element of trust that consumers today require when they buy meat in-store or online. Their Beef Dripping is a great product utilizing the animal fat rendered from the beef carcass. Similar to lard, beef dripping is used in cooking and makes amazing chips and is a great alternative to goose fat for roast potatoes.

Winners of the Irish Whiskey Awards 2013

Irish Whiskey is enjoying the strongest period of growth in popularity since the 1800′s. The number of Irish whiskey distilleries has doubled from three to six in the last few years and with several new Irish Whiskey start-ups in the pipeline, this could at least double again in the next few years.

This event was the first of the new Annual Irish Whiskey Awards

Exports are booming worldwide and there is huge investment being put into the industry. In the USA alone, 2012 saw Irish Whiskey sales grow by a whopping 22.5% making it the fastest growing spirits category in the country. The Irish Whiskey Awards were held on the Friday the 4th October, in the Old Jameson Distillery, in Dublin and I was delighted to see one of my own favourites, Redbreast from Midleton Distillery, winning the single pot still award.

These recently launched Irish Whiskey Awards intend to be a new annual event to celebrate and reward the dedication to quality and flavour that it takes to create world class whiskey. It has been organised by the Celtic Whiskey Shop, which recently won "Best Retailer Worldwide" in the World Whiskey Awards, along with members of the Irish Whiskey Society and the recently formed Celtic Whiskey Club.

First opened in June 2003, the Celtic Whiskey Shop has become a mecca for whiskey lovers.

This was the first year that the diversity and quality of the vibrant Irish Whiskey industry was nationally celebrated in Ireland. With whiskey drinkers broadening their tastes and consumers demanding more diversity and quality, new small craft distillers have embraced the opportunity to fill niche markets with small batch and high value brands.

The Irish Whiskey Awards were presented across eight categories and the winners are:

Best Blended Whiskey Under €50

Writers Tears Pot Still Blend from Writers Tears Whiskey Ltd., Co. Carlow
Runners up: Powers 12 Year Old Special Reserve, Teeling Small Batch

Best Blended Whiskey Over €50

Runners up: Jameson Gold Reserve and Jameson 18 Year Old Limited Reserve

Best Single Pot Still Whiskey

Runners up: Midleton Cask 1044, Bottled for the Loop at Dublin Airport

Best Irish Cask Strength Whiskey

Redbreast 12 Year-Old Cask Strength produced at Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork
Runners up: Writers Tears Cask strength and Connemara Turf Mor

Best Irish Single Malt Whiskey

Bushmills 21 Year Old produced at Bushmills Distillery, Co. Antrim
Runners up: Teeling Whiskey Company 21 Year Old and Bushmills 12 Year Old Distillery Reserve.

Irish Whiskey Bar Of The Year

L. Mulligan Grocers, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7
Runners up: The Palace Bar, WJ Kavanaghs and Against the Grain

Irish Poitin Of The Year

Runners up: Glendalough Sherry Cask Poitin and Cooley Single Pot Still Poitin.

Overall Irish Whiskey of the Year

Redbreast 12 Year-Old Cask Strength produced at Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork

It will be interesting to see how many Irish Whiskies from the new breed of distillers will be in the running for the awards next year. For more information on Irish Whiskey and to buy all these Whiskies Online go to The Celtic Whiskey Shop Website

FOOD&WINE Magazine Restaurant of the Year Awards 2013 Winners

The winners of the 13th annual FOOD&WINE Magazine / Maison Louis Latour Restaurant of the Year Awards were announced at a gala luncheon on Sunday 25 August at The Four Seasons, Dublin 4. These awards, now in their 13th year, are considered one of the most prestigious and authoritative culinary awards in the Irish calendar.

Recognising the best Irish restaurants and culinary talent, diners from all over Ireland were invited to nominate their favourite restaurants and chefs, with the top entries going forward for deliberation by a national culinary panel of judges, made up of industry experts and national food critics. After much deliberation on each category, each judge votes in secret for their top 10 in each category, including the top 10 restaurants and chefs from all four provinces, with Dublin treated separately.

The national awards for Overall Best Chef and and Overall Best Restaurant are put through a further judging process, whereby the entire judging panel and all previous panel members vote electronically and in private to ensure a measured choice for these important awards. All of the regional and national winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 25 August. In addition to Best Chef and Best Restaurant, awards will also be presented for Best Sommelier, Best Service, Best World Cuisine and Best Wine Experience.

“In recent years, Ireland’s food sector has faced difficult business conditions, however, many chefs and restaurateurs have responded with better value and creativity. The 2013 shortlist sees some excellent new talents emerging, but also shows that old favourites continue to maintain standards while adapting with the times and offering exceptional quality and value for money,” commented Miriam Atkins, editor of FOOD&WINE Magazine. Maison Louis Latour returns for a second year as title sponsor with the other fine wineries in the Febvre portfolio sponsoring individual national awards.

Gregory Alken, sales and marketing director of Febvre & Company and representing the title sponsor, Maison Louis Latour, reiterated that point adding, “Working in collaboration with the hospitality industry and partnering restaurants and food emporia around the 32 counties of Ireland, we admire how this sector has embraced the challenges by making so many changes, improving standards and yet offering even better value while promoting fresh Irish food at its best. We at Febvre together with Maison Louis Latour take great satisfaction and pride at being associated with such a resourceful industry that showcases the very best of Irish produce in an innovative and local way”.

Louis Fabrice Latour is the 11th generation of the Latour family
Maison Louis Latour, was founded in 1797 and has become a natural custodian of an ancient tradition.  Authentic to its roots, it has always remained a point of honour to remain independent and family-owned and is now run by Louis Fabrice Latour who represents the 11th generation of the family.  Their wines are celebrated around the world for the elegance and balance that have always outlined the vinification practice of Maison Louis Latour.
